JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Summary

The public works CDL driver / laborer should be able to operate street and sanitation department motor vehicles and road maintenance equipment.  This position also performs tasks involving physical labor jobs around the city. This position must have the ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools and machinery. This position must have the ability to perform strenuous work in varying weather conditions and other duties as assigned per supervisor. You must have and maintain a valid CDL license Class A or B.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Drive and operate city vehicles and equipment.
  • Pre-inspect vehicle prior to use.
  • Responsible for basic vehicle cleaning and maintenance.
  • Must comply with all safe work practices, policies, and processes at all times.
  • Complete required paperwork with accuracy.
  • When not driving will perform a variety of manual labor tasks as assigned by supervisor.
  • Usage of various handheld tools as necessary.
  • Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed.
  • Maintain regular attendance
  • Other duties and responsibilities related to the nature of the job may be assigned on a temporary basis as needed.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Provide proof of citizenship and/or eligibility to legally work in the United States.
  • Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test and criminal background, and pass random drug screening.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and attire.
  • Must have and maintain a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) Class A or B.
  • Knowledge and compliance of traffic laws/ DOT regulations/ driving knowledge.
  • Clean driving record with no DUI/DWI convictions in the past seven years.
  • Must have or be able to obtain current DOT physical/card.
  • Experience with mechanical work and vehicle maintenance.
  • Must partner with other city employees as instructed by department manager to ensure daily schedules are met.
  • Attendance required according to attendance policy to ensure crew ability to operate at a normal efficiency level.
  • Initiative to perform/assist with other positions for job completions.
  • Attitude/cooperation: always maintain courteous and professional manner with co-workers and the general public.
  • Ability to occasionally work various times during day, night, or weekend hours at various locations.
  • Ability to follow instructions of supervisor/facility manager in order to adhere to company policies and safety guidelines.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to extreme weather, noise, and moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

This position requires visual and hearing acuity, in accordance with federal regulations which mandate that truck drivers have to hear a forced whisper at 5 feet, have at least 20/40 vision, a 70-degree field of vision and the ability to distinguish the colors of traffic lights.

The position lifts heavy objects, walks and stands for long periods of time and performs strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. The employee lifts, pushes, pulls or carries objects up to 60 pounds; uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue; and effectively jumps, sprints or throws objects.  The position requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination. The position requires the ability to quickly move arms and legs. The employee must have excellent stamina.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., 40 hours per week. This position could require longer hours and weekend work.

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred but not required.  Must have and maintain a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) Class A or B.
