Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Recycling has many benefits including reducing trash disposal costs, conserving natural resources, and it saves space at the landfill. In addition, products produced from recycled materials require less energy for their production than the same items produced from raw materials.

Bluefield has made it easy for citizens to participate in our efforts to make our city a GREEN community...and it's FREE. Thanks to the tremendous growth and positive response from our community, collections of recyclable material are now averaging more than 12 tons per month.

Collection bags are available at City Hall, located at 200 Rogers St. If you are unable to pick up the bags at one of the distribution points, call 327.2456 and we will deliver the bags to you.

Businesses and schools with high volume recyclables are picked weekly on Monday and Wednesday. Businesses with low amounts of recyclables may choose to use the residential pickup schedule (once per month) or a bi-monthly schedule.

Here’s how the recycling program works:

  • Recyclables are collected on Tuesday of each week according to the schedule listed below (except businesses and schools).
  • All recyclables should be set at the curb no later than 8 a.m. on your designated day.
  • Place recyclables separate from trash, using city-supplied collection bags.

The city of Bluefield accepts the following items for recycling:

  • Tin cans (vegetables, soup, etc.)
  • Aluminum soda cans
  • Newspaper
  • Cardboard (any type)
  • Plastics labeled # 1 and # 2
  • Plastic shopping bags
  • Mixed paper - copy paper (any color), shredded paper, notebook paper, magazines & catalogs, envelopes, paper bags & packaging paper, junk mail & telephone books. Almost any kind of paper that can be torn.
