Garbage truck

The City of Bluefield provides weekly garbage pick-up for residents and businesses. Garbage must be placed at the curb or alley no later than 7:00 a.m. the day of collection, in tied bags, in a container, and not weighing more than 60 lbs. Below are some other important reminders for both commercial and residential disposal.

Disposal of Prescription Medication

NEVER dispose of medication by pouring it down the drain, flushing it, or throwing it into the garbage. Medication should not be allowed to get into our water system or have someone that is not prescribed that medicine to have access to it. Medications can be safely disposed into permanent drop box located at the Mercer County Sherriff's Department, address is 1501 West Main Street, Suite 31, Princeton, WV 24740.

Disposal of Dangerous items

All dangerous items such as broken glass and sharp pieces of metal must be securely wrapped to prevent injury to collection staff. Placing these items in paper or plastic bags is not considered adequate protection.

Disposal of Hypodermic Syringes

All discarded hypodermic syringes shall be rendered inoperable and placed into a rigid plastic container (like a liquid detergent bottle, soda bottle) with the lid tape closed. Then place container taped up and marked sharp into your regular garbage. The safety of our staff is important.

Disposal of Pet Waste & Fecal Matter

Fecal matter and pet waste contains very harmful bacteria and needs to be disposed of through your plumbing system. Items such as cat litter should be triple bagged and should way no more than 35 lbs.

Disposal of Paints

Oil based and latex paint will not be collected at the curb. Paint cans will only be accepted if the can has sand inside and the content inside the can is completely dried up. Placing paint inside of garbage can lead to unsightly leaks on to the streets, vehicles, etc.
